Welcome to Hannover!
We cordially invite you to participate in the international, interdisciplinary “Pulmonary Hypertension Symposium – Update 2016”. A strength of this meeting is its multidisciplinary nature – bringing together basic-translational scientists and clinicans (cardiologists, pulmonologists, neonatologists, thoracic surgeons, intensivists). The first session concentrates on basic mechanisms and genetics, the other 3 sessions have strong clinical focus. This meeting will update you on recent discoveries and innovations, and addresses several important paradigm shifts in the field of pulmonary hypertension and heart failure:
Histology of advanced PVD
Pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) is characterized by progressive obliteration of pulmonary arterioles leading to increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), right heart failure, and death in ≈25-60% of patients 5 years after diagnosis. The pathobiology of PAH is complex and multifactorial, and none of the current therapies has been shown to be universally effective or able to reverse advanced pulmonary vascular disease, characterized by plexiform vascular lesions (image).

Rationale for an Expert Consensus Statement on Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension
- Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in children with PH are markedly influenced by unique features of the pulmonary circulation in childhood (developmental biology), and certain pediatric diseases which are commonly associated with PH.
- A new WSPH classification was published in December 2013, and slightly modified in the new 2015 ESC/ERS guidelines – a document that mainly focuses on the clinical care in adults.
- Yet, comprehensive, detailed but practical recommendations addressing the specifics of pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary vascular disease in children have been lacking.

Don’t miss our PH Workshop!
This is one of the very first full day PH workshops with hands-on sessions in small groups (4 rotations). The workshop is geared to clinicans on senior resident, fellow or attending level. The content of the practical sessions in the morning (echocardiography, catheterization laboratory, intensive care unit, ECMO) can be applied to pediatric and adult medicine. However, the cases in the afternoon will have a focus on pediatric PH, and PH associated with congenital heart disease. Special features of this PH workshop:
The workshop will start with registration in the pediatric research center at Hannover Medical School, followed by an overview talk on echocardiographic assessment of PH and heart failure. Participants will then be divided in approx. 5-6 colleagues per group. Teaching language is English or German, depending on the composition of the group (max. 40 participants).
